Solids, Liquids, Gases Matter!

First, we started our lesson by finding pictures of different types of matter. Once the students found the pictures they had to take the picture to the correct station: solid, liquid, or gas?

THEN! WE did a super fun experiment! We used baking soda, vinegar, a balloon, and a water bottle. A solid plus a liquid equals a gas! WOW!!

Finally!
We made rooter floats:
Solid plus Liquid equals Gas . . . and a very yummy treat!

TWELVE staff members, 4 students, and 4 siblings went to watch 3 of our special olympians play basketball. Our team may not have won, but Liam, Aidan and Francisco were FANtastic!
I love our school spirit and support!

Sooo . . . I may not have won the Whiteford School Spelling Bee, but I had the best fans and an EPIC entrance! I loved have my paraprofessionals AND my students be a part of my introduction!

New Year's Resolution: Show Gratitude

I just love this new activity that we are working on . . . and so do the kids! Our class New Year's resolution is to show gratitude. SO! . . . every week each student will pick a different person to write a thank you letter to. This is a great way to share ideas, talk about people that are important to us, and practice our writing skills! Last week was our first week and my students already look forward to the next week by thinking about who they will write to next. I love my job!

What Do you See? Hear? SMell? Feel?

We are loving science! Students are working on using their 5 senses to describe what they are observing. We are starting with small science activities to practice our observation skills! My students are doing such an exceptional job working with partners and using words to describe what they see, hear, smell and feel. Check out our shaving cream rain clouds!

We also used baking soda and vinegar to create and observe a chemical reaction. Students smelled the vinegar first! EW! They did not like it. However, they loved watching and listening to the chemical reaction when we mixed the 2 ingredients!

We'll Follow Your Lead Star Lord . . .

I love my classroom. I love my students. AND I love all things Guardians of The Galaxy. So today for cooking we channeled our inner Chris Pratt and made our own version of "Donald Duck" pancakes. For those of you that have not seen the viral video of Chris Pratt making "Donald Duck" pancakes, I have included the video for you below. (just click on the picture of the pancake) It's an absolutely adorable video of Chris Pratt trying to convince his son that the pancake he just made is Donald Duck.

As a small group, we first talked about how there are so many different jobs. Mrs. Harding is a teacher. Chris Pratt is an actor. The students watched a clip of Chris Pratt as Star Lord and as Owen, from Jurassic World. Then, I told the students that he is also a dad that likes to make pancakes. The students watched Jack respond to the Donald Duck pancakes. They all agreed with Jack that the pancake did NOT look like Donald Duck.

After watching the videos, we all brainstormed our ideas
for pancake making. My students were so excited to get started. As always, the students organize the ingredients and supplies. We then read the recipe together and take turns pouring, measuring, and mixing the ingredients.

After making the pancake batter, we were ready to take turns and make our designer pancakes. Below is a video of my students proudly sharing their ideas for their pancakes. (And, unfortunately for them, I was the one to guide/help them.) EEK!

When we were all done eating our pancakes, the students wrote down 3 clues to describe there pancakes. We will be hanging these pictures up in the hallway with the clues to see if Whiteford students can guess each pancake.

Well . . .are our pancakes good? bad? or a bit of both? ;)

2016 school year is off to a great start

My students would not let me forget about cooking! (not that I would want to anyway!) So our school year started off with making a Baby Groot snack and A Guardians of The Galaxy Shake. The kids are already excited to learn about cooking AND this year, they are excited to learn about Guardians of The Galaxy! The slide show below is a collection of pictures from the making to the sharing of our Baby Groot snacks!

Stormtrooper parfaits and GoVizzle!

This yummy desert caught my eye while looking for cooking ideas on Pinterest. So . . . I thought, how can I make this Star Wars related? Hence, the name Stormtrooper Parfaits! So I quickly pinned this delicious looking recipe and got started. (Click on the picture to get the recipe.

I was excited to make these with my students. I was even more excited to use GoVizzle.com to present both the recipe and the review activities to go with it. (click on one of the pictures below for a link to GoVizzle.)

As teachers, we all know that sometimes we need a quick lesson. Planning takes quite a bit of time, and if you run out of ideas . . . there is always Pinterest. I found this super easy recipe on Pinterest compliments of Like Mother, Like Daughter blog. The name of this yummy treat is No Bake Monster Cookie Granola Bar Bites. (You can click on the image to the left to go to the recipe.) HOWEVER, all of my recipes need to go along with the Star Wars universe.

So . . . my kids made Asteroid Field Cookie Bites!

Cooking Thursday is always exciting for my students! However, it was made even better when we finally were able to use the Christmas gift that one of my students bought for me . . . R2D2 measuring cups! I'm not sure who was more excited, me or my students! We worked hard to squeeze the honey and scoop out the peanut butter. Check out the slide show to see how we used our fun measuring cups!

After all of the measuring and pouring we were finally able to stir and mash! We tried using a black spoon to stir the ingredients, but quickly discovered that we needed to use our hands. When we mash with our hands we always wear cafeteria gloves. When we were done with the stirring and the mashing, we rolled them into all different sizes. The kids loved this! Check out our fun!!
