Ellie Bean the Drama Queen
From my first teaching job until present, I have and continue to expand my knowledge in the area of Sensory Processing Disorder. In addition, when my daughter was first evaluated at the age of 3, I knew my experiences in this field were about to change and become more personal.
Because of my experiences both at school and more importantly at home, I wanted to write a book about my daughter Ellie. My book describes how problematic behavior, which may be construed as “bratty”, can be much more troublesome.
In this book, Ellie seems to be a spoiled brat due to her temper tantrums. However, as her mother finds out, Ellie is struggling to express her need for comfort and sensory integration in a world that is completely overwhelming to her. As a teacher, it is often difficult to explain to typical peers why a child needs a sensory diet. It is even more difficult to explain to family, such as grandparents, why a child behaves in a way that society deems to be bratty. My book is geared toward school children to help explain some of the reasons why they see their school peers swinging or jumping on trampolines during the school day. The book may also help parents explain problem behavior to siblings and extended family.
